The Right to Feel Safe Project - Kimberley Region

The first in the series of Parent Workshops in the Protective Behaviours Program under the "Right to Feel Safe" project occurred in Derby on the 16th of August.  It was organised locally by Lenka Vanderboom, Community Development Officer at the Shire of Derby and by Lisa Hirini, Children Services Officer, DCD Broome.

The parent workshop proved very successful with parents getting some hands on skills to take home and use with their children.  We even had a few dads come along with the mums which was great to see.

The program was well received by the parents who expressed in their feedback forms the value of teaching their children their private body parts, public and private and the Circle Concept for levels of intimacy.

The parents showed their singing skills doing Wibbly the Wombat and practising network persistence.

It was great to hold this workshop in Derby and we look forward to going back again.

See our photo page for more great photos from our workshops.

Derby Basic Training Workshops

The first in the series of Basic Training in the Protective Behaviours Program under the Right to Feel Safe project occured in Derby on the 14th and 15th of August 2006.  It was organised locally by Lenka Vanderboom, Community Development Officer at the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley and by Lisa Hirini, Children's Services Officer, Department for Community Development, Broome.

We were delighted to have 23 participants in the training, representing Derby Community Health, the Young Women's Centre, Marnin Bowa Dumbara Aboriginal Corporation, Derby Aboriginal Health Service, Shire of Derby/West Kimberley Youth Services, Derby Community Health, Ngunga Women's Group, the Family Healing Centre, North West Mental Health Service and the Department for Community Development.

The training was very well received by the group.  In the feedback forms most participants acknowledged that the training was 'very useful', that they were 'very satisfied' and all participants were provided with new information.

By the afternoon on the second day when all of the pieces of the program had fit together for the group, they were inspired to create fantastic poetry, drama and artwork through which they could communicate the Protective Behaviours message to their family and community  The photos speak for themselves.

Protective Behaviours WA Inc will return to Derby to provide Train the Trainer workshops for the many participants who expressed an interest in training others in the Protective Behaviours Program.  This will sustain and strengthen the level of personal safety experienced by the children, young people, women, men and the communities around Derby.
